Influencé par Marx puis par Wittgenstein, MacIntyre se tourne ensuite vers Aristote au début des années soixante-dix. A chacune de ces étapes contrastées, MacIntyre a placé au coeur de sa réflexion ce que le libéralisme tient aux marges de la politique, l'âme, la communauté et la vérité. Il entend établir qu'en l'absence d'une véritable spiritualité libérale, le libéralisme ne doit pas régenter tous les aspects de l'existence sous peine de mutiler les individus.

It is extraordinary that it should take a French academic to produce the first adequate overview of the thought of a man who will surely be regarded as one of the most original minds of the 20th century. I highly recommend the study to all those who wish to understand the most important intellectual currents of the last 50 years in the English language. Particularly strong on MacIntyre's dual roots in the 'New Left' of the 1950s and the ordinary language approach to philosophy that emerged among the followers of Wittgenstein.
